Kick counter app: track your baby's movements on iPhone

PreBaby's own kick counter, plus five dedicated kick counter apps for iPhone, compared on what their own App Store listings say: rating and number of ratings, price, languages, when they were last updated, and which of the things you'd want from a kick counter — a session history, movement strength, notes, export, Apple Watch, and reminders — each one lists.

We make PreBaby, one of the 6. It is listed first so you know where we stand; then come the five dedicated kick counter apps, in order of how many US ratings they have. We did not run hands-on tests for this page — everything about the other apps comes from their App Store listings on 5 October 2026, linked below.

How PreBaby's kick counter works

Open the kick counter and tap "I felt a movement" each time you feel one. The first tap starts the session and shows its start time, with the running count shown next to it; "undo last movement" removes a tap made by mistake.

"Save session" stores the session — its count, start time and end time — in your history, and "past sessions" opens that history so you can look back at previous counts.

An in-app note is deliberately plain about what the counter does not do: if you notice fewer movements or a change in your baby's usual pattern, it says not to wait to finish counting and to contact your birth team right away, because reaching a certain number does not prove your baby is fine. It links out to the NHS page Your baby's movements.

Counting kicks is free — the listing says "the free version counts kicks" — and works offline, does not need an account, and has no ads, in 14 languages.

How to keep track of your baby's movements

NHS guidance on your baby's movements is explicit that there is no set number of movements you should feel in a day. What matters is getting to know your own baby's usual pattern and noticing a change from it, because babies differ hugely in how much and how often they move. Movements should continue right up to and during labour — a quiet baby at full term is not the expected shape of things, and any reduction is a reason to call, not a sign that things are slowing down naturally as the end gets closer.

Our guide on how to count baby kicks walks through what to notice instead of counting to a number — when your baby is usually active, what the movements feel like, and how to write a short note that is more useful to your midwife than a total.

Call now, not later

Contact your midwife or maternity unit immediately, at any hour, if your baby's movements slow down, weaken, change pattern, or stop — or if you are simply not sure and something feels off.

  • Do not wait for the morning or for your next appointment.
  • Do not eat or drink something cold first to try to provoke movement.
  • Do not use a home doppler: the RCOG advises against them, because a heartbeat you find yourself can be falsely reassuring while something is wrong.
  • If movements reduce again after a check, call again, every time, even if you were checked yesterday and everything was fine.

The apps, one by one

  1. 1 PreBabyOur app

Best for: a free kick counter already inside the pregnancy tracker you may already be using.

Tap "I felt a movement" each time you feel one. The first tap starts the session and shows its start time, with the running count shown next to it; "undo last movement" removes a tap made by mistake. "Save session" stores the count, start time and end time in your history, and "past sessions" opens it.

An in-app note says that if you notice fewer movements or a change in your baby's usual pattern, don't wait to finish counting — contact your birth team right away, because reaching a certain number does not prove your baby is fine; it links out to the NHS page "Your baby's movements". Part of the free PreBaby app, not a stand-alone download; no US App Store ratings yet; works offline, no ads, account optional, 14 languages.

  2. 2 Count the Kicks!

Best for: the most US ratings here (8,597), and a listing that also names movement strength, notes and sharing with your provider.

The listing says it offers daily tracking of movement patterns and strength in the third trimester, with personal notes during sessions and data you can download and share with your provider. A widget lets you start a session or view your baby's movement history from the home screen, and "Smart Reminders & Notifications" adapt to your routine.

Made by Healthy Birth Day, Inc. Its App Store entry lists Apple Watch among supported devices, though the description text itself does not name Apple Watch. The listing does not state a specific kick target.

  3. 3 Baby Kicks Monitor

Best for: Apple Watch support and the most languages of any dedicated kick counter here (28).

One button starts a session and another logs each kick; the listing says it records the date, start date, duration and number of kicks of every test, and stops the session automatically once it reaches 10 kicks or 2 hours. Sessions can be shared with a doctor or friend by email, and the app supports Apple Watch and Face ID.

The listing suggests counting from about 28 weeks "or when you feel kicks regularly" and says to contact your doctor if kicking is less or deviates significantly from normal — its own guidance, not NHS guidance.

  4. 4 Baby Kick Counter & Tracker・

Best for: a calendar of past sessions plus notes and feelings on each one.

Tap to log each kick during a session; the listing says Session Summaries show how long each session lasted and how many kicks you counted, a Calendar View lets you browse past sessions, and you can add notes or feelings to any session. Reminders to check in daily are optional.

The listing says it does not collect or share personal information. English only.

  5. 5 Time for baby

Best for: sharing real-time kick notifications with a partner or friend.

A single tap registers a kick; the listing says its statistics answer questions like "When did the child last kick?" and "Has the child moved a little less than usual?" It focuses on sharing: partners and friends you invite get a notification every time your baby kicks.

Last updated 13 June 2024 — over a year before this comparison. English and Swedish only, per the listing.

  6. 6 Pregnancy Kick Counter

Best for: daily reminders so you don't forget a kick-count session.

One tap counts a kick; the listing says it tracks kicks, rolls and hiccups, sends daily reminders so you do not miss a kick-count session, and produces weekly summaries you can share with your doctor.

The listing names a $6.99 weekly or $29.99 lifetime subscription inside the app; it does not say which features, if any, are free.

Pregnancy apps that also list a kick counter

Beyond dedicated kick counters, three pregnancy tracker apps we compared separately on our best pregnancy tracker apps page also name a kick counter in their own App Store listing:

How we picked these 6

We searched the US App Store for "kick counter" on 5 October 2026. The five dedicated kick counters on this page are the ones whose own listings are about kicks: Count the Kicks!, Baby Kicks Monitor, Baby Kick Counter & Tracker・, Time for baby - Kick counter and Pregnancy Kick Counter. Two more apps come up in the same search — Contraction Timer & Counter 9m and Huckleberry: Baby Tracker — but neither app's own description mentions kicks at all, so we left them out of this comparison. PreBaby is not a dedicated kick counter app — it is here because we make it, and it says so above.

Then we took every number from Apple's public App Store lookup for the US store on 5 October 2026, and counted a feature only if the app's own description names it. We have not tested the other apps hands-on for this page, and we have not scored them: ratings shown are their App Store ratings, not ours. App Store numbers move every day, so check the listing before you decide.

What to look for in a kick counter app

Questions about kick counter apps

Is there a free kick counter app?

Yes. All 6 apps on this page are free to download from the App Store. PreBaby's kick counter is part of the free PreBaby app — its listing says "the free version counts kicks." Pregnancy Kick Counter's listing names a $6.99 weekly or $29.99 lifetime subscription inside the app; the other four listings here do not name a subscription for kick counting.

What is the best kick counter app?

There is no single best one; it depends on what you want from it. Of the five dedicated kick counters, Count the Kicks! has by far the most US App Store ratings (8,597) and its listing also names movement strength, notes and sharing with your provider. Baby Kicks Monitor's description names Apple Watch support. PreBaby, which we make, is the one to try if you want a kick counter built into a wider pregnancy tracker that works offline with no ads and no account needed.

Does a kick counter app tell me my baby is fine?

No. PreBaby's own in-app note says it plainly: reaching a certain number of movements does not prove your baby is fine. A kick counter is a record of what you felt, not a diagnosis. If you notice fewer movements or a change in your baby's usual pattern, contact your midwife or maternity unit straight away — see "Call now, not later" above — rather than relying on any app's count.

Does a kick counter app work on Apple Watch?

Two of the apps here list Apple Watch: Baby Kicks Monitor names Apple Watch support in its App Store description, and Count the Kicks!' App Store entry lists Apple Watch among its supported devices, although its description does not mention it. Baby Kick Counter & Tracker・, Time for baby, Pregnancy Kick Counter and PreBaby do not list Apple Watch, so check the current listing if that matters to you — a feature can be added or dropped between updates.

Is Count the Kicks' method the same as NHS guidance?

Not quite the same framing. Count the Kicks' listing says it offers daily tracking of your baby's movement patterns and strength in the third trimester — a research-based tool, in its own words. NHS (UK) guidance is different: there is no set number of movements you should feel, and the advice is to get to know your own baby's usual pattern and watch for a change from it, rather than count towards a target. Count the Kicks' listing also says its built-in guidance is there to help you recognize changes. Whichever app you use, a change from your baby's normal is the reason to call, not a number.

When should I start counting kicks?

There is no single official week. NHS guidance does not set a number to count to: it says most people first feel movements between 16 and 24 weeks, and to get to know your baby's usual pattern once movements have settled into something you notice most days, often in the second trimester, and to keep noticing it right up to and during labour. Some listings suggest their own starting point — Baby Kicks Monitor's says from about 28 weeks "or when you feel kicks regularly," and Count the Kicks' listing focuses on the third trimester. Whichever app you use, the point is building a sense of your baby's normal, not hitting a number by a particular week.

This page compares apps; it is not medical advice. No app replaces your midwife or doctor, and anything that worries you — especially a change in your baby's movements — is a reason to call them, not to check an app.
